Program Notes

This fine concert piece opens with a very lyrical slow section featuring a clarinet and baritone solo over expressive jazz-like harmonies. Energetic rhythms build around a Latin flavored melody in the middle section before returning to a beautifully orchestrated quiet ending.

In Praise of Autumn was commissioned for the James E. Stephens Conducting Recital and premiered by the University of Florida Concert Band on April 19, 1984. The work is dedicated to my mother, Mrs. Laura M. Hilliard.
