A composition in three movements for wind orchestra (symphonic band). The title refers to the great confrontation between the Old Testament prophet Elijah and the false prophets of Baal recorded in I Kings 18. In the expanded instrumentation version, the brass are split into two antiphonal choirs on either side of the audience. The two alto saxes are behind the audience for movements II and III, as are 4-8 extra persons playing whistling tubes see photo. The middle movement is a lightly-accompanied extended solo for euphonium with echoes coming from from the two alto saxes in the rear two corners of the hall.

The work was begun in March 1994 in New Smyrna Beach, Florida, while the composer was an artist-in-residence at the Atlantic Center for the Arts, and was completed in Knoxville, Tennessee, the following March. The work received its premiere in 1995 by the University of Kentucky Wind Ensemble under the direction of Richard Clary and has been recorded by the Valparaiso University Chamber Concert Band under the direction of Dr. Jeffrey Scott Doebler. This composition has been supported with grants from the American Music Center and Meet The Composer.
